The beautiful, new $480 million Amway Center may be required to shelter the homeless whenever there isn’t a game. This is according to the state’s lawmakers who are looking at a new bill.
On Monday a Senate panel voted to pass a bill that would force professional sports teams to give the state money if they don’t set up a homeless shelter within their stadium or arena. This includes the Orlando Magic, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Miami Dolphins and the Jacksonville Jaguars.
This bill also requires teams to use some of their tax subsidy to purchase children and veterans tickets. In doing so they would be able to avoid local television blackouts.
Senator Mike Bennett and R-Bradenton who sponsored the bill said that this law has been around for 24 years now. It requires stadiums to act as homeless shelters.
